Players’ Shot Distances

Shooting ZonesBasketball scoring rules are simple: if a player made a shot inside the three point arc, it counts 2 points and if this shot is beyond the three point arc then it counts 3 points.

In NBA, three point arc stands 7.24m (23.75 ft) away from the basket at front and 6.70m (22 ft) away at the corners. A shot made just inside this arc is equal in value as a lay-up (generally occurs inside the restricted area, 1.22m (4 ft) away). But despite the equal values, the success percentage of these shots are not equal as close shots are made with a higher percentage. Therefore, shot distance is one of the primary factor to determine its success.

So why players attempt long range two point shots instead of close range shots? The obvious reason is that because sometimes they have no other choice as the defense pushes them to do it. Nevertheless, a good offensive player can pass its defenders, approaches to the basket and takes the close range shot. Similarly, taking a three instead of a long two is always smart way to score as both shots have similar success chances but their values are not equal.

In this analysis, we will examine players’ shot selections in term of their shots distances by also dividing the players according to basketball positions. We define the following shot types according to the ranges:
